Pacific Northwest Symposium Highlights

The first-ever Uganda-Pacific Northwest Symposium concluded Monday April 16th 2018 in Seattle, Washington. About 20 delegates representing Ugandan Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) attended the week long event. The chief guest was HE Ambassador Mull Katende, Uganda’s ambassador to the United States. The event was co-hosted by the Pacific Northwest chapter of the African Chamber of Commerce.

Special thanks to Angela Bukenya, Isaac Mukisa Ssebakijje, Dr. Benjamin Omara Abe and the Pacific Northwest Ugandan community. Here are some highlights.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The team was welcomed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A lesson on good leadership in business practice.

Gebbers Farm

Over 200000 acres of land. With a huge facility that picks, clean, package apples, cherries, pears, orchards. Family owned. The team learned about the latest trends in agricultural technology and maximizing production.

Hellbent Brewing Company

The delegates visited Hellbent Brewing Company, the largest solar powered brewery in Washington state. They learned about new innovations for renewable energy as well as using renewable energy to reduce production costs. In attendance: Muhammed Lubowa, MD All In Trade (U) Ltd – solar power installer.

Fire Drills

The team visited a fire station in Seattle, where they learned about workplace safety.

Bates Technical College

Bates Technical College gave our delegates a tour and sat down with them to discuss opportunities in technical education and student exchange partnerships. The principal of Buganda Royal Institute, Mr. Anthony Wamala, was in attendance, as well as Berna Ndugwa Nabukalu, the Personal Assistant to the Minister of State for Education in the Kingdom of Buganda.

“As a result of our lobby, Bates Technical Institute wants to explore possible ways of going to Uganda to assess current welding applications in the country with the aim of professionalizing welding in Uganda. With the coming oil pipeline construction, beneficiaries would feed into the labor force for that pipeline project,” said Isaac Mukisa Ssebakijje, one of the Symposium’s organizers.

Appreciation Dinner

Hosted by Dr. Benjamin Omara Abe, the Board Chair for the African Chamber of Commerce Pacific Northwest. The chief guest was HE Ambassador Mull Katende. A special send-off for our delegates. The lessons learned and new connections will create opportunities for their businesses!
